Southern stars and a passing plane, circa 1979

Thanks for visiting Nightscapades. I’m Doug Ingram, an Australian who has been looking up at the night skies with interest & amazement since I was a 13-year-old boy in 1977.

On the left here is one of the first night-sky photos I shot, sometime around 1979. I used my mother’s simple no-name camera, mounted on my dad’s tripod, using a piece of string to hold the shutter open. From those distant days of shooting, developing and printing black-and-white photos, I’m now capturing as much colour and detail as I can with digital equipment. These “nightscape” photos include earthly landscape elements–tree, hills, lakes, oceans and even buildings–as well as the twinkling lights of the sky.

Living in Sydney, Australia’s largest city, with all of its pesky light-pollution, I now have to drive at least 100 km to reach areas with truly dark skies. But, after over 40 years of looking up, I’m still excited by getting out under the heavens and photographing the wonders above. Being able to bring them to you online is a bonus.
